WLAL BREAKING NEWS

November 10, 2011 -

Beginning next school year (2012-2013), the WLAL will be switching around a few of its sports seasons.  The WLAL is one of the last leagues in Michigan still playing girls basketball in the fall and girls volleyball in the winter/spring.  In order to coincide with the rest of the Lutheran grade schools and high schools in the state of Michigan, the WLAL will be moving its girls basketball season to the winter session.  We are unsure at this point as to whether the girls and boys basketball seasons will be played at the same time or be played in two separate seasons with Christmas being the separation point.  The girls volleyball season will be moved to the fall session, thus being played at the same time as soccer.

There has been much discussion over the past few years at the WLAL athletic directors meetings concerning these issues.  The decision was made with a few reasons in mind (in no particular order):

·      The girls basketball season being played in the fall session, as the WLAL has been doing, has hindered programs due to lack of out-of-league scheduling.  Since most every other school participates in girls basketball in the winter, it is very difficult for WLAL schools fielding girls basketball teams to schedule other games and tournaments outside of the normal league schedule (including the state and national Lutheran tournaments).

·      The girls volleyball season moving to the fall session also allows schools to schedule out-of-league contests for all of the same reasons above.

·      The WLAL will coincide more consistently with the sports seasons at our local Lutheran High Schools, allowing these institutions to better assist the WLAL with its postseason league tournaments.

There is much more discussion to come at the January WLAL Athletic Directors meeting.  When that information has been “ironed out,” it will be posted here.
